Embarking on a new adventure is always exciting, and my recent trip to South of the Border was no exception. Having heard intriguing tales about this iconic roadside attraction, I couldn't wait to experience its unique charm and history. My journey to this vibrant location was serendipitous, as it followed a commercial photo/video shoot in Wilmington, North Carolina. But before heading back, I couldn't resist capturing some exhilarating moments of people surfing on the beautiful North Carolina beaches with my trusty drone. This trip was truly a perfect blend of work and leisure, and it left me with unforgettable memories.

South of the Border - An Introduction:

Located on the border of South Carolina and North Carolina, South of the Border is an iconic tourist attraction that has captured the imaginations of travelers for decades. Established in 1949 by Alan Schafer as a simple beer stand, the attraction has since evolved into a vibrant complex featuring a wide array of quirky shops, restaurants, and entertainment options. Its catchy billboards, scattered along highways for miles, have beckoned countless travelers to stop by and experience the magic of this eclectic oasis.

A Glimpse into the History:

The story of South of the Border's origin is as fascinating as the place itself. The founder, Alan Schafer, saw an opportunity to capitalize on the contrasting alcohol laws in North and South Carolina. At the time, South Carolina prohibited alcohol sales while North Carolina allowed it. Schafer cleverly opened a beer stand right on the state line, making it a convenient pit stop for travelers looking to quench their thirst. As the years passed, he expanded the complex into a massive destination with restaurants, shops, motels, and even an amusement park.

A Stopover on the Way Back:

After wrapping up my commercial photo/video shoot in the bustling city of Wilmington, North Carolina, I felt the urge to unwind before hitting the road back home. Fortunately, the picturesque North Carolina beaches were just a stone's throw away. The warm sand and inviting waves were irresistible, and I decided to spend some time capturing the beauty of people surfing with my drone. The beach's vibrant atmosphere and the enthusiasm of the surfers created the perfect backdrop for some incredible footage.

Heading South:

Having satisfied my wanderlust in North Carolina, I packed up my gear and embarked on the journey to South of the Border. The anticipation grew as I spotted the quirky billboards along the highway, each one teasing a unique attraction that awaited me. As I approached the complex, the towering "Pedro" statue, the iconic mascot of South of the Border, welcomed me with open arms.

Exploring South of the Border:

Once inside, I felt like I had stepped into a vibrant carnival. Neon lights illuminated the night sky, and the air was filled with laughter and excitement. The bustling marketplace offered a variety of souvenirs, from classic postcards to peculiar trinkets that captured the essence of South of the Border's kitschy charm.

As I strolled through the complex, I couldn't resist indulging in some of the local delicacies. The authentic Mexican cuisine at one of the many restaurants was a true delight, and I savored each bite as I soaked in the colorful surroundings.

My trip to South of the Border was a unique adventure that combined business and leisure seamlessly. From the stunning drone shots of surfers riding the waves in North Carolina to the quirky charm of South of the Border, every moment of this journey was unforgettable. It reminded me that travel isn't just about reaching a destination but also about embracing the unexpected detours along the way. Whether it's a spontaneous surf session or a chance encounter with a quirky roadside attraction, every experience has the potential to enrich our lives and leave us with cherished memories.
